OUGD402 - Studio Brief 2: It's Up To You Research

Having thoroughly read the brief, I feel it is now time to start carrying out some relevant research which coincides with what is expected from us. I want to discover existing work and existing identities to see whether I can find any inspiration at all. At the moment I am open to creating anything at all, as long as it relates to packaging, as this is something I am currently passionate about.

I saw this a while ago and think it is quite fitting to this brief. I like the idea of creating something which is presented in a tube format. It gives it a bit more of a unique edge to it and is memorable and striking. The design of the label here could be developed to have my details printed on to it, and I could possibly create a business card of my own for the recipient to take away with them. Possibly providing more than one in hope for more interest.

This is quite a clever concept. The idea of having a set of boxes with different personal qualities printed on each one would work well. The boxes could all fit together to create one package which resembles me as an individual and as a designer. Although I think the quality of this design could be much stronger, I like the use of brown paper and think this is something I could definitely consider.

Source

This caught my eye straight away, as I could see that there was an instruction sheet as well as other elements to it, which drew me in straight away as I could see that it was interactive. The idea is that the individual accesses the brain by inserting the USB drive in to the computer, this is stored at the back of the monkey's head. This is not only inventive but it also works aesthetically, and I feel as though it would attract a lot of people's attention. I could possibly consider making something which resembles me, and have a USB drive with a digital representation of my characteristics and qualities as a designer. This would cover a variety of different mediums.

Although I am determined to stay away from using black and white for this brief, as I tend to work with monochrome a lot, this was one of the reasons this caught my eye. I like the simplicity of the logo which has been created and think the overall design is very professional and clean.

The way the logo was created is creative, concise and most certainly something I could take inspiration from. This has also initiated another idea, whereby I could create something with the starting point being a sum which effectively 'sums me up' as an individual. For example, 1x21=me, if I was to concentrate on my age. This is just an idea which could be developed further.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are designs such as this one. Where the designer has concentrated on creating something which is a bit more authentic and rustic. This hasn't been designed as personal identity but instead, identity of the company. I think it would work for both however, and it is important that I am able to portray myself in the most successful way possible, in terms of the materials I decide to use as well as the colours and overall finish.

Once again, here is another example of a design which has been created to store the contents in a tin almost. Although this is slightly different and well crafted in comparison to a standard tin or can. I like the idea of having a band which can be wrapped around the can and printed on, and I could possibly work on the idea of the band of paper being removable.

    Source

Just after finding the previous design I came across this one. The label on the wine bottle has been designed to be removable and reveal information underneath. I think this is a very innovative way of designing something which enables the recipient to discover more and peel away to reveal more answers.

This design shows two separate boxes with different designs on the front, and how they fit together to form a panda once they are stacked on top of each other. This is a clever concept and something I could possible adapt and make my own.

    Source

This is a similar idea of creating something which fits together to create an image. I love how this has been created with the pencils to form a face which fits within an open cut out on the packaging.

This feel better self aid kit is something which could also be adapted. Each of the containers inside the bag contain all of the personality traits which make up a strong individual. It is a clever idea and at the same time injects fun in to the design. However I am not sure whether it would be possible to literally fill each of the containers with relevant items, and whether it would be moving away from graphic design too much.

These boxes were initially designed as storage boxes for a furniture company, and then they were developed as blocks which can be kept for decorative purposes or simply as a piece of design. I could maybe try and list all of my strongest characteristics and number them, then create a set of boxes which can be stacked together with the number on one side, imagery on another and possibly a long image which could represent me on the reverse.

I saw this and although it isn't directly related to graphic design it gave me an idea. Within a tree there are tree rings to represent it's life. I could work on this idea and create something which is made up of lots of rings which fit together to form my life over the past year. So, rather than creating a ring to represent a year of my life, it would represent a month instead.

I thought this was a clever way of interacting with an audience. Although this isn't something I would personally create to fulfill this brief, it is certainly something I could take note of when trying to make my work interactive.

This is a very clever concept, once the packaging is opened, the sandwiches are placed on the plate. I could play on this idea and create something which could be opened to reveal my qualities.

    Creative package design.

I decided to type into Google and see what I could find relating to graphic design CV's. I found this one, which is very much an infographic. My work could be as simple as this, however I feel as though this would be too easy and not creative enough to portray my love for packaging.

    Source

Below is the text which came with this design, explaining the reasoning behind what we can see. I like the idea of everything being organised within a file, and this is something I could consider, as I feel as though it is one of my strongest traits and most important traits to have.

A combined résumé and open job application formed as a humorous "Top Secret" report, giving away information about a "newly educated and creative designer, who have settled in the city". This is a self promotion project that were made to display a variety of skills  as a graphic designer and get attention from local design agencies after i finished my studies.

The idea emerged after a phone call with a design studio who said they would "file me" for later, which made me think of old and dusty folder cabinets, and I thought I should make something that would fit nicely there...

In today's digital world, rather than just send a link to a web portfolio, I wanted to leave something physical at the desk that would get noticed and leave a smile on the receivers face.

This has been created with the idea in mind that it must be visually enticing. I am not very keen on the colours which have been used here but I think the paper craft works really well.

    Source

If I was to create something with a simple fold to it, stored in a compact format such as this one, I think it would be practical and appealing. I would ideally like to create something which is compact but also 3 dimensional if possible, as this is one of the main focuses of my past year and I feel as though it is important to be illustrated in this brief.

This closely relates to the way I like to design. I love how the recipient is responsible for creating their own response to the CV. It gives it an added unique element which is once again memorable and interactive. These are two things I feel strongly about. I think the colours she has used here are striking and work well together. However I would consider myself as being a bit more subtle, using more neutral tones. I will discover which colours to use throughout my development.

The design below was created for an end of year university exhibition to promote themselves as a designer. It is a simple booklet which contains the necessary information to sell themselves. This is something I could easily create, however I would prefer to create something more three dimensional as I feel this would represent me closely.

    Source

The design below is quite illustrative as well as informative. The key thing I noticed about this design and have found most inspirational, is the use of the tree rings printed on the page. She has developed it so that each ring represents her in a different way. This is a visually intriguing way of presenting information. When considering some of the research I came across earlier, relating to the idea of peeling paper away, I think this would be a strong way of bringing it all together. I could possibly create a tree like formation whereby all of the tree rings say something different about me - Indicating how I have grown over the past year. On the other hand, if I decide to take a less literal route I could design something which involved removing parts of the pack to discover me in the centre.

    Source

It is obvious from this design that the person is interested in type and ways of presenting information using grids as well as a few illustrations. This is quite the opposite to me, but I still find it interesting to see how other people present themselves.

Although this isn't the most inspiring piece of work I have chosen to write about, I still think there are elements of it which could become quite useful to me. The way this illustration portrays the way in which the person likes to work is clever, as it is presented in a way which is easy to understand and looks balanced. I could perhaps do something similar with my work and develop illustrations which indicate the importance of certain attributes, such as patience, by showing how many hours I have spent on certain things relating to work, for example blogging, researching and developing ideas.

    Source

The thing that stood out to me about this design was the front cover. I like how it says one thing when you look at it at a glance, and then when the sleeve is removed it reads another message. Simple things like this make a piece of design work and stand out from the rest.

The infographics inside stand out against the black and white photography, separating the two elements of the booklet and giving them their own identity. I think this is a clever way of informing people about yourself, rather than listing all of your qualities individually.

With the idea in mind still of focusing on the tree rings, which in turn could represent a tree of life and my growth over the past year, this editorial piece below relates strongly. The cover has been embossed with rings, and I think the inside of it is really fresh and clean. I am also very fond of the typography choice as it is something I would choose to use, with it being sans-serif, simple and striking.

I feel that the illustration on the left hand side of this image is relevant to me, as it represents the type of finish I am aiming for. I want to try and include illustrations in this brief, as this is something I have started to move towards recently. I am trying to develop my illustrations but would love to be able to feel confident about drawing so that I can improve and include it in my work where appropriate.

Similarly here I love this illustration, and I could certainly take inspiration from it, as it is illustrating inside of something, which could be adapted to me illustrating the inside of my brain and what goes on inside it.

This is some artwork taken from a website, I just thought it was relevant to post as it links to the idea I currently have in mind relating to a tree. Although this is a much more literal interpretation it has definitely inspired me to develop my idea further.

When I saw this, it gave me the idea to concentrate on the idea of the rings of a tree and create boxes which fit inside each other to form a trunk. The lid could simply have my logo on it and possibly instructions regarding how to use it effectively.

When considering illustrative styles, I thought back to the lecture we had with Si Scott, and I decided to visit his website for inspiration. I really love all of his work and find it fascinating how it is hand rendered and so precise. I would love to develop my own signature like he has managed to do, and be able to adapt it to work with any designs I produce. Hopefully I will be able to develop this whilst completing this brief.

I love how the designer here has used nature to create such striking and powerful imagery. I feel as though if I was to do this for this brief it would be going off track slightly and wouldn't necessarily represent me, however it is just yet another example of how successful it can be to merge nature with graphic design.

I have referenced this work before now, at the start of the course, for another brief or task and feel as though it is more that relevant for this brief too. I feel as though it indicates a full circle I have taken to get to this stage, from the start of first year up until now, where we are presenting ourselves and how we visualise ourselves as an individual and designer. The leaf wrapped round the bottle has given me another idea, to experiment with paper wrapping round an object which are in the shape of leaves and represent the idea of turning a new leaf to become the person I am today. Each leaf could represent a different characteristic of myself and as they are peeled away they could reveal my in the centre in some way, with my logo printed clearly 'LJWB Graphic Design'.

The idea of incorporating imagery in my work in some way is very appealing, and I feel it is probably necessary as this is something I have done throughout the year. I quite like how this design has been composed and think it is functional and clear.

    Merchant and Mills

Linking back to the idea of the pack being creative and interactive, here there are holes at the top of each of the parcels. This could allow me to create something whereby the recipient would hang each of the separate parcels on to something to create the final product.

I think here it is very clear that the designer has put a lot of thought into the materials they are going to use. I think it is very adventurous and with more time, I feel as though I could probably use unusual materials to create my own pack. However, I am not sure whether it is necessary in this case, as I am hoping my pack will speak for itself.

    Source

Once again, designs which are relevant to one of my initial ideas. I like the simplicity of the drawings and the use of colour, however I don't think it is very suited to my way of working.

    Source

I absolutely love this branding. I think it is probably one of the most successfully produced, intricate design I have come across. I love how once you look closely at the detail and see what each image is made up of, it comes as such a surprise. Illustrating that the individual has tried their best to create something different with a unique edge to it, and certainly succeeded. I will most certainly be taking inspiration from this, by continuing with my line drawings and working to improve them in the long term so that the quality will meet up to this.

    Source

If I was to screen print, this is the kind of work I would like to produce for this brief. However I don't think it represents me and my way of working over the past year. I love how the text has been arranged on the page though, and will certainly take inspiration from this when designing how I would like my text to be positioned. I have always loved having two lines separating the main text from the rest, this is something I will definitely consider.

The idea of creating a publication which is packaged is clever. However I think it is something that has been repeatedly done, and I would much rather set myself a high and challenging goal which I have to try and achieve. This way I will feel much more satisfied with what I produce.

I love the use of brown paper here with the black print. I have always felt that this works really well and put it into practice earlier on in the year with my pooch pouch I created. I would love to try and incorporate brown paper into my work somehow for this brief.

I think the design of these boxes is really professional and striking. The black works well to create a pattern on certain sides of the boxes and the prints with the images on the remaining sides are very bold and clear. I could possibly look at creating a set of boxes, taking inspiration from this, but maybe design them so that they all fit together in an interesting way.

I really love how personalised this is and think it is a clever way of interacting with an audience. I certainly want to create something which has a purpose and a deeper meaning behind it, so that the audience finds it appealing and memorable.

I think all of these products put together work so well as a set, and the logo design is extremely clever to represent a photographer, as it works really well with the surrounding work as well as simply on it's own.
